Together works better: the Cancer Research Society and IRIC join forces to promote cancer research
Published on October 6, 2015
IRIC and the Cancer Research Society are joining forces to promote cancer research in the framework of a poster campaign.
On the theme “La recherche sur le cancer: on s’en occupe à 100%” (Cancer research: It gets 100% of our attention), Stéphane Rousseau, spokesman for the Cancer Research Society, will appear on some of the Society’s billboards with Guy Sauvageau, Principal Investigator at IRIC, and Iman Fares, a doctoral student in Dr. Sauvageau’s laboratory.
Dr. Sauvageau and Ms. Fares, along with several other members of IRIC including Anne Marinier and IRIC’s team of medicinal chemists, are behind the discovery of a new molecule (UM171), the first of its kind, which allows for the multiplication of stem cells from umbilical cord blood. Over time, this major advance could facilitate stem cell transplants aimed at curing a number of blood-related diseases, including leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma.
This association between the two organizations not only makes it possible to increase public awareness on the importance of supporting cancer research, but also attests to IRIC’s increasingly important role in the fight against cancer.
