The young doctoral student dreams of designing a cancer vaccine
Étienne Caron was named Star Researcher yesterday at the Recognition Award Gala of the first edition of the Rendez-vous du savoir. The doctoral student from IRIC was recognized in the “Ça mérite d’être reconnu!” competition for his contribution to the advancement of knowledge and its concrete impact in our everyday lives.
An explorer and observer who is curious by nature, Étienne has been fascinated by life sciences since his childhood. Today, he pursues his passion on a daily basis as a doctoral student in the Immunobiology research unit at IRIC. His work seeks to better understand the interactions between the immune system and cancer cells, with the aim of designing a cancer vaccine.
“I feel very privileged to work in an environment for which I am passionate about. I am surrounded by outstanding professors and researchers who make it possible for me to pursue my quest to discover an effective cancer vaccine,” Étienne Caron points out.
Barely 31 years old, Étienne Caron has an impressive track record. He has excelled both academically by winning several scholarships, as well as scientifically by publishing in many specialized journals. In 2005, during his biomedical science studies at the Université de Montréal, he was invited to join the IRIC team of Dr. Claude Perreault, a leading expert in the field of immunology and one of the Institutes’s founding researchers. From his first meeting with Étienne, Dr. Perreault could see a promising future for the young man.
“Étienne is rigorous, passionate and creative. He has all the assets to prosper in our field and make significant progress in the fight against cancer. He has already accumulated several successes in his research and is solicited worldwide for his expertise,” explains Dr. Claude Perreault, “I am convinced that he will become one of the scientific leaders of his generation.” In addition to his academic and scientific proficiencies, Étienne excels in the fields of martial arts and music. He is a native of Lévis.
