A key issue in cancer biology is the way in which cells become cancerous. Our research team has found that disruption of certain nuclear processes in the cell contribute to the transformation of a healthy cell into a cancerous one. One protein in particular–the eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4E–when dysregulated, contributes to this transformation process. Using cell and molecular biological, biophysical and atomic resolution structural studies, our team aims to elucidate the molecular underpinnings of the biochemical events which lead to cells becoming cancerous. These studies have helped us design new therapeutic strategies currently being tested in clinical trials.
