 IRIC's Animal Facility is a shared resource that provides state-of-the-art services in laboratory animal medicine and husbandry, as well as animal procurement, inventory and care to IRIC and University of Montreal investigators. It is also accessible to outside scientists from both academia and industry through collaborative and contract research agreements.
Located in IRIC's Marcelle-Coutu Pavilion, our animal facility currently has a housing capability of 7,500 ventilated cages for mice. Actual capacity is 10280 cages.
Our facility has a floor area of 3,437m 2 (36,950ft2). Once our expansion is completed in 2008, we will have a total floor area of 4,353m2 (46,800ft 2).
In providing our investigators with the support they need, the facility ensures the humane care and use of its laboratory animals. As such, it adheres to the policies and guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and achieves compliance with the institutional requirements set out by the Comité de déontologie de l'expérimentation sur les animaux (CDEA) of Université de Montréal.

Facilities and Equipment
All ventilated cages are provided with an automatic water system.
Quarantine
- four housing rooms: eight 160-cage rack systems for a total of 1,280 ventilated cages
- an individual wash facility (clean and soiled sides), with cage-washer and 33ft 3 autoclave
Central wash facility (clean and soiled sides)
- a tunnel cage-washer with automated soiled litter disposal and clean litter filling
- cart-washers for cage washing and other purposes
- two 232ft 3 autoclaves
Transgenesis Sector (SPF)
- nine transgenic mice housing rooms: forty-eight 160-cage racks systems for a total of 7,680 cages
- two manipulation rooms
- a euthanasia and necropsy room
- workspaces for technicians
Transgenesis Facility
- a micro-injection laboratory
- a cell culture laboratory
- a housing room with six 160-cage rack systems for a total of 960 cages
- workspaces for technicians
Pharmacy Unit
- seven conventional housing rooms for various rodent models
- two housing rooms for transgenic mice: two 160-cage ventilated rack systems for a total of 320 cages
- two experimentation rooms
- a manipulation and surgery room
- a euthanasia and necropsy room
